It doesn’t matter, because the Sixers have got the Answer… Allen Iverson that is. Who’d have thought that Philly would be welcoming home its wayward basketball superstar when the 76ers face off against the Denver Nuggets at the Wachovia Center Monday night? Regardless of your opinion as to whether it is a good move or the next step towards basketball irrelevance, it is bold move by a franchise that needs a significant infusion of energy. Time will be the judge as to whether Allen Iverson will truly be the Answer again in Philly... For young Iverson supporters, Schuylkill Valley will be getting youth NBA Iverson replica jerseys very soon, so hoop it up for the holidays!

Congratulations to the Yankees and their fans. And although the Phillies fell short of a repeat, the season has to be considered a success. It was quite a ride. We can’t wait for 2010!... In the meantime, we’ll shift our focus to the NFL, NHL and NBA as their seasons come into full swing. This Sunday night’s battle for the top spot in the NFC East between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles is definitely the game to watch this weekend. The Eagles are coming off a dominant performance over the Giants with big plays from DeSean Jackson, Shady McCoy and Donovan McNabb. The Cowboys offense, led by Tony Romo and Marion “the Barbarian” Barber, seems to be firing on all cylinders too. It should be a typical NFC knock down drag out brawl. The Cowboys are most definitely looking for a bit of revenge against the Eagles after they knocked them out of playoff contention last season. This rivalry always provides some memorable moments on the field. We’re giving the nod to the Eagles with home field advantage.

So get your New Era cap on and put on your Majestic jersey and get ready to “root, root, root for the home team.” The 2009 World Series- GAME ON!

The thrift shop, formally known as Give & Take, stocks its shelves entirely with donations from members of the community. The items are then made available for the public to take home at no cost.
Visitors to Give & Take will find a wide variety of goods: household items, clothing, books, toys and small furniture. All are absolutely free.
The Rev. Paul Thornhill, pastor of Limerick's Cornerstone Family Church, said the idea of the no-cost swap shop came to him not long ago in the middle of the night, and it has materialized just as he envisioned.
"I stand back right now and see the operation working exactly like I saw it at 3 o'clock in the morning; very simply, give and take." And so the thrift shop operates -- with absolutely no exchange of money.
Anyone can donate items no longer used or needed. And anyone can browse the racks full of hundreds of items and take home anything useful. Donation is not necessary in order to leave the shop with a new-found treasure, nor is the taking of items limited to an equal donation. Tax deduction forms are available upon request for donations.
Jerry Williams, president of Schuylkill Valley Sports, heard about Thornhill's idea for Give & Take and immediately got involved.
"With the economic times, there are many people out there hurting and suffering and there are a lot of people out there who want to help," Williams said.
Schuylkill Valley Sports donated clothing racks, hangers, bags and even new merchandise to Give & Take. Similarly, the Eagleville Kmart donated shelves and racks to display the shop's wares.
The store location itself was even provided free of charge to Thornhill and his team by the Gambone Development Co.
"Give & Take has truly become a display of community sharing together," Thornhill observed.
The thrift shop is located in the former Apple Basket gift shop, at the intersection of Kugler Road and Ridge Pike, in Limerick. Give & Take is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and is run entirely by volunteers who clean donations, restock shelves, help shoppers navigate the store and bag items they wish to take home.
Dolly Roush of Linfield, who has clocked many hours volunteering at Give & Take, said, "It is the most gratifying thing I have ever done. I have met some wonderful people who need things, and to be a part of helping to provide them really is so fulfilling."
Gina Rich of Pottstown has been on both the giving and receiving ends of Give & Take and is pleased with the experience.
"It is truly a blessing that something came along in the community for people who cannot afford to go out and buy new things. They have everything there. It is a wonderful place," Rich said.
Since the shop's opening in late May, Thornhill estimates Give & Take has already seen 800 to 900 people come through the store, giving, taking and volunteering their time.
Looking forward, he said he believes Give & Take will fulfill a need in the community for months to come.
"Give & Take is not just about the material things that are in there," the pastor said. "They do help, but being encouraged is important and people need that as well."

Schuylkill Valley Sports Opens New Store in Wilkes Barre PA

Pottstown, PA (15 July 2009) Schuylkill Valley Sports, providing major athletic brands of footwear, clothing, team apparel, equipment and licensed collectibles, is pleased to announce the grand opening of its newest location in Wilkes-Barre, PA in the Wyoming Valley Mall.
The mall, located off of route 81 near the intersection of routes 115 and 309, hosts this new 5,000 square foot store between Macy’s and Bolton’s in the space formerly occupied by the Shoe Department. “For the past five years, Schuylkill Valley Sports has had the great fortune of having Brian Dawkins as our official spokesperson,” said Schuylkill Valley Marketing Manager, Phil Baumgardner. “In that time it has been our privilege to get to know him on a personal level. We truly feel that Brian embodies all of the values that Schuylkill Valley Sports believes in and wishes to project to our valued customers. His intensity, dedication, professionalism and outstanding character exemplify all that is good in sports today. He is an indisputable inspiration to athletes of all ages.
“We are extremely pleased that, despite the geographical challenges, Brian will continue as our spokesperson. We wish Brian and his family only the best of fortune in this transitional time.”
In a TV promotion for Schuylkill Valley Sports Dawkins expressed, “Sports taught me how to be a team player. It builds character. You gain a respect for people. You have to learn how to work with other people. If you are given… you need to give back and that’s what I believe… Family values are important to me, and that’s why I teamed up with Schuylkill Valley Sports.”
Dawkins, a second-round draft pick of the Eagles in 1996, spent 13 years of his professional career with the team before moving to the Broncos earlier this year as an unrestricted free agent for a reported five-year, $17 million dollar deal and was one of three finalists for the NFL’s “Man of the Year” award. During his tenure as an Eagle, he racked up seven Pro Bowl selections joining Hall of Famers Chuck Bednarik and Reggie White as the only three players in team history to earn seven Pro Bowl selections.
Additionally Dawkins became the first player in NFL history to record a sack, an interception, a fumble return, and a touch-down reception in a single game versus the Houston Texans in 2002 and played in a franchise-record 18 playoff games.
Selected by his teammates in 2005 as the Eagles’ Man of the Year for his charitable work, Dawkins is also the regional spokesman for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and plays a part in the Home Depot NFL Neighborhood MVP program which recognizes players who are making a positive impact in their local communities.
