Kevin McFarland meets with SV Sports, talks college plans and more.
Kevin McFarland is taking the term multi-sport athlete to a different level. The Hamburg senior participates in football, basketball, tennis, and cross country. He plans on joining the track team this spring. That's five sports in one school year. McFarland still manages to maintain a 3.8 GPA. He has completed his application to the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and Military Academy at West Point. He told SV Sports' Paul Roberts that the Naval Academy is his top choice. "The type of men that it produces is the type of man that I want to be when I grow up. It builds leaders," said McFarland. The 6'3 wing player is in the middle of basketball season. He's averaging nearly 16 points per game and dropped a career-high 24 on Tulpehocken on January 16th. The Hawks have a new head coach this year and it's someone that McFarland is very familiar with. His dad, Kevin, took over for Nick Evangelista who stepped down after five seasons to spend more time with his family. Coach McFarland is thrilled to be coaching his son. "It's probably the most rewarding experience a father could have. It's beyond words how I can express how it makes me feel. It's a beautiful thing," remarked McFarland. Hamburg finished (5-17, 2-9) a season ago. The Hawks are (9-7, 4-3) this year and on the bubble for the District 3 playoffs. The top ten schools will qualify in Class 4A. "It would be important to the school, the community, and these players. These guys have worked hard for a long time," noted McFarland. The Hawks trail Fleetwood and Schuylkill Valley in the Division 3 standings of the Berks Conference. Roberts had fun speaking with the father and son about their favorite NBA player, sports movie, musical performer, and food.
