Pottstown coach Levert Hughes

Pottstown football coach Levert Hughes compared restoring the Trojans' football program to constructing a house.  He's taking it one brick at a time.  "We had to build it and build it to make a home for our kids," Hughes told Paul Roberts of SV Sports.  Pottstown improved dramatically last year.  The Trojans went from (1-9) in 2022 to reaching the District 1-4A playoffs a season ago.  "A little bit more continuity with everybody. Everybody was basically on the same page," explained Hughes.  Pottstown finished (5-6) last fall.  The Trojans lost to Pope John Paul II in the District 1 semifinals.  Running backs Dimark Lyons and Nahzier Booker graduated, as well as quarterback Dillon Mayes.  Booker, who also played linebacker, was a first team pick on both sides of the ball in the Frontier Division.  Hughes mentioned that Chris Thomas and Tyson Robbins will be players to watch at the skill positions this year.  Jeremiah Geiger, Kingston Allen, and Jose Cherrios will be counted on in the trenches.  Geiger and Allen are both 6'4 and 260 pounds.  Hughes gave credit to offensive coordinator Terrence Shawell for keeping the players active in the community.  "He's an integral part because he comes in and out of the middle school and the high school," emphasized Hughes.  Pottstown ended up fourth in the Frontier Division last season behind Pope John Paul II, Phoenixville, and Pottsgrove.  The Liberty Division of the PAC includes Spring-Ford, Perkiomen Valley, and Owen J. Roberts.  Those three squads combined for 26 wins in 2023.  "We have a tough league and it's something to hang your hat on," said Hughes.
