Reigning 6A Player of the Year in PA Tatum Werley

When her mom first told her the news, Tatum Werley didn't believe it.  Wilson's shortstop was named the 2024 Class 6A Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association.  "I cried, I sobbed. My brother and sister came running up to my room. It was a surreal feeling. It was amazing," Werley told SV Sports' Paul Roberts.  The Youngstown State commit has picked up right where she left off last season.  Werley is hitting .710 with eight extra-base hits and three home runs.  In just ten games, she has knocked in 17 runs and scored 16 more.  Last year, Werley had an eye-popping .737 batting average in league play.  She blasted five doubles, three triples, and four homers in those twelve contests, while piling up 24 RBI.  Wilson returned nine of its ten starters from a season ago, including Kaya Werley.  Tatum's younger sister is a junior center fielder.  Kaya was an All-County selection in 2024.  "She's my biggest supporter. She's my sister and the best teammate I've ever had. I could not ask for anything better than her," said Tatum.  Kaya is hitting .400 this year for the (8-2, 5-0) Bulldogs.  They're riding an eight-game winning streak.  Wilson has some rising stars on the mound and at third base.  Shannon Bratton (7-1, 2.73) has 87 strikeouts in 48.2 innings.  "I sometimes have to remind myself that she's only a freshman...She's been killing it like she's been here for years," remarked Werley.  Ava Legath handles the hot corner for the Bulldogs.  The sophomore has a .486 batting average to go along with a team-high four doubles and 15 RBI.  The Bulldogs went (19-5) last season.  They reached the BCIAA Championship before falling to Hamburg 8-0.  Wilson is searching for its first Berks County title since 2013.  "That would mean so much. It would be probably the highlight of my softball career here," emphasized Werley.  She has spent a lot of time in Ohio.  Werley admitted to being a Buckeyes fan, despite living in Penn State country.  She will go on to play for Brian Campbell, the winningest coach in Youngstown State history.  "I think it was the energy. I visited a lot of schools, but something about Youngstown felt like home to me. The campus is beautiful, their softball program is amazing," replied Werley.
