Villanova RB commit Brandon Way Jr.
Lancaster Catholic's football team didn't bring home any hardware last fall. The (7-5, 5-2) Crusaders finished behind Schuylkill Valley in Section 5 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Lancaster Catholic then fell to powerhouse Steel-High 36-7 in the District 3-2A championship. Brandon Way Jr. is hoping to put the Crusaders back on top in 2025. "That's always the main goal. That's the standard at Lancaster Catholic. We always want to win championships. We want to win trophies," Way told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. The Crusaders won state titles in 2009 and 2011. They've claimed six District 3 championships in program history. Way is coming off a monster season. He rushed for 1,816 yards and 26 touchdowns as a junior, while averaging 8.4 yards per carry. The All-State selection is headed to Villanova after originally committing to Bryant University in Rhode Island. Way's dad was happy with the change, in part due to the proximity of Villanova to Lancaster. "It was a no-brainer for me. It's a very good school academically, and it's one of the best FCS teams in the country. I have a great relationship with the coaches there," explained Way Jr. The 5'10, 185-pound running back plays basketball at Lancaster Catholic. He's also a sprinter on the track & field team. The Crusaders return five starters on each side of the football this year. Colton Hegener is a key piece on offense, defense, and special teams. He was voted a first team wide receiver in Section 5 last season. Hegener caught 42 passes for 492 yards and six scores. He's also dangerous in the kick return game. Seamus Connor and Max Gochenauer will anchor the offensive line. Trenton Moore, a first team DE in Section 5, is a force coming off the edge. Lancaster Catholic will miss RB/DB Corde Douglas who transferred to Garden Spot. The race in Section 5 is expected to be tight with Berks Catholic, Schuylkill Valley, and the Crusaders considered the favorites. Lancaster Catholic begins the season against a familiar foe. The Crusaders travel to Camp Hill on August 22nd. These teams hooked up in the District 3-2A semifinals with Lancaster Catholic prevailing 27-20. Way, who has more than 2,500 career rushing yards, is ready to roll. "I'm super excited. It's gonna be bittersweet because it's my last season. I've been itching to get on the field since the end of last year," he replied.
