Wyomissing goalie and UMBC commit Skylar Maggs
Wyomissing's girls lacrosse team lost to Twin Valley in the BCIAA semifinals and the District 3 Championship a season ago. The Spartans had plenty of motivation when they traveled to Elverson on Tuesday to battle the Raiders. "We all had something to play for. We wanted to prove ourselves and we did a great job at that," Skylar Maggs told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. Wyomissing beat Twin Valley 7-3 in a matchup of the top two teams in the Class 2A state rankings. The Spartans remain undefeated this spring at (11-0). They held the (9-2) Raiders scoreless in the second half. "I think we all talked well. At practice we really focused on where we have to slide to, who we're gonna have to help. Our defense is amazing," said Maggs. The junior goalie, who reached 300 career saves earlier this month, stopped seven shots. Skylar is committed to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her twin sister, Kacey, is a High Point commit. Their younger sister, Mackenzie, was also in the spotlight on Tuesday night. The talented freshman scored twice in the third quarter. "She's gonna be amazing. Me and Kacey keep telling her 'Keep shooting, keep shooting'. They don't expect that out of a freshman," replied Skylar. Wyomissing took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Emily Maturi, another freshman, and North Carolina commit Audrey Hurleman. She suffered a torn ACL last April. Hurleman returned to the basketball court on January 28th and helped the Spartans win their third straight District 3 title. She scored again with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter to put Twin Valley in a 6-3 hole. Wyomissing got goals from juniors Molly Macrina and Lola Gentile. Sophomore Karly Hyde provided three assists. The Spartans, who were on top 4-3 at halftime, were able to control possession in the fourth quarter. "Our offense did a great job of just holding the ball, being really relaxed," noted Skylar Maggs. Junior Ellie Kaplan, a Syracuse commit, had a pair of goals for the Raiders. Steph Dunbar and Lynzee Anderson made four saves apiece. Twin Valley has been the PIAA-2A runner-up for three consecutive years. Maggs believes her team can make a deep postseason run this season. "Very far, I think we're gonna do great. Great things to come," she said with a smile.
