UNC lacrosse commit Audrey Hurleman
Wyomissing raced out to a 5-0 lead over Twin Valley in the BCIAA girls lacrosse championship, but the undefeated Spartans weren't able to shift into cruise control. The Raiders came roaring back and tied it at 6-6 with 4:17 left in the third quarter. "It was a little nerve-racking. They're a great team. They really came at us, but we just had to stay calm," Audrey Hurleman told SV Sports' Paul Roberts. The North Carolina commit scored with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter to put Wyomissing in front 7-6. The 5'8 senior found the back of the net again with 2:42 to go for a 9-6 advantage. Hurleman finished with three goals and two assists in the 9-7 victory. The (19-0) Spartans claimed their first Berks County title. "It's pretty amazing. It's a great experience. We've been trying to keep the program moving in the right direction and being able to accomplish that this year is pretty special," said Hurleman. Emily Maturi also had a hat trick. The talented freshman set up Hurleman for the pivotal goal late in the third period. "She's amazing, she's really confident. We have so much trust in her to facilitate on the offensive end," noted Hurleman. Mackenzie Maggs, another freshman, added a goal and an assist. Her older sister, Skylar, made ten saves. "She's like our quarterback. She tells us what to do, where to be. She stands on her head every game," remarked Hurleman. Skylar's twin sister, Kacey, put Wyomissing on top 2-0. Molly Macrina's goal made it 3-0 with ten seconds left in the opening quarter. Twin Valley was led by junior midfielder Ellie Kaplan. The Syracuse commit piled up six goals. "She's a really good competitor, really great athlete. She's going to do great things at the next level too," said Hurleman. The Spartans and (16-3) Raiders are ranked #1 and #2 in the state in Class 2A by PA Lax News. They could square off again next week in the District 3 semifinals. In addition to winning the BCIAA championship, Audrey and her family got very exciting news this week. Her older brother, Max, was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers after attending rookie minicamp. "It was unexpected, kind of crazy. We were all kind of shocked. Really inspiring seeing how his dreams are coming true," emphasized Audrey. Max Hurleman played four years at Colgate before opting to walk-on at Notre Dame where he became the punt returner. Audrey joked that she will still remain an Eagles fan.
